When the Age of Dinosaurs began, forest ecosystems were already extremely stable. As we move into the Cretaceous, however, plant communities were suffering heavily from the sustained devastation inflicted by herds of large herbivorous dinosaurs. Plants may have evolved natural toxins and hard leaves or needles in response to this.
