In the late Cretaceous comes the opening of the worlds first flower - something like a modern magnolia. Flowers accelerate the plants reproductive rate by increasing the efficiency of the pollination process. Together with shorter germination times, this may have given flowering plants an advantage in the race to recolonize the ravished forests.
