The fossil record suggests that a massive extinction took place towards the end of the Ordovician, possibly through climatic changes. While the intense evolutionary activity of the Cambrian and Ordovician periods took place within relatively stable conditions, the mass extinction seems to coincide with a sudden global cooling.
