By the beginning of the Tertiary, the continents had separated, allowing many fauna to evolve in isolation. The development of ice caps lowered the temperature and encouraged the growth of grasslands in Africa.

After the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous, the mammals radiated astonishingly. This is truly the age of mammals, from these strange manatees in the sea to tiny bats in the air.
