One of the most famous early predators was Dimetrodon, which appeared in the Early Permian. It had fearsome jaws and teeth, and a puzzling "sail" running down its back. Some people have suggested that Dimetrodon used it to sail across water, but most authors now think that it may have acted as a radiator, adjusting the animals body temperature.
