Homo sapiens is undoubtedly the dominant species on the planet. What is the impact of this success on other species?

The current observed rate of extinction of birds and animals is between 100-1000 times the natural rate at which species go extinct. This has led some biologists to claim that we are in the midst of another, human induced, mass extinction.

The main reason for this is habitat destruction: an astonishing proportion of the world's tropical rainforests have been destroyed in recent years, and these are areas of rich biodiversity.
