Technological developments over the last 2,000 years have meant that, for the moment, human evolution is at a standstill. Progress in medicine, birth control and social welfare have removed many selective forces, and mean that evolutionary concepts of fitness no longer apply.

In the social sciences, it is an ongoing debate as to whether biological or cultural evolution offers the best explanation of human behavior.
