HOW TO DO A RESEARCH PROJECT — COLIN ROBSON

Free access full-text journals

This is a selected list of journals where the full text of their articles are freely available to all via the Web (in some cases the most recent numbers of the journals are only available to subscribers).

These journals are listed here primarily as a resource for readers who do not have membership of an academic library (through which many more mainstream journals can usually be accessed, either in print or e-journal format).

It is a very mixed bag, some covering mainstream areas and topics, others verging on the weird and wonderful. However, I have found some very interesting and worthwhile articles in their pages, and I am sure that by diligent searching in journals which seem as though they may be relevant to your project, you will do the same.

The Directory of Open Access Journals http://www.doaj.org/ operated by Lund University Library in Sweden has a more extensive wide-ranging list of free, (mainly) full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. They are mostly in English. Subjects under 'social sciences' include anthropology, education, ethnology, gender studies, library and information science, media and communication, psychology, sociology, sports science and general social sciences (124 journals), other subjects covered include agriculture and food sciences, arts and architecture, biology and life sciences, business and economics, earth and environmental sciences, general works, health sciences, history and archaeology, languages and literatures, law and political science, mathematics and statistics, philosophy and religion, and technology and engineering.

The list here is limited to journals published mainly or exclusively in English, where it is possible to get free access to the full text of articles without the need for a library or other subscription.

Apologies if any links don’t work. They all did when this material was prepared, but things change on the Web. If a link given to a journal does not work, try typing the journal title into your search engine.

General, non-subject specific journals are listed first, followed by those in different subject areas.
