The Cambrian period contained an enormous burst of evolution, known as the "Cambrian Explosion". In the early Cambrian the seas contained a huge variety of soft-bodied, mobile creatures, such as this worm Ottoia prolifica from the Burgess Shale collection. By the end of the Cambrian a range of hard-shelled creatures such as molluscs had evolved, suggesting the presence of predatory animals.
