Protein

evo_butt.jpg

A protein is a molecule made up of a sequence of amino acids. It is generally assumed that each protein is encoded by a single gene.

Different proteins have different numbers of amino acids, but an average figure is about 100 - 300 amino acids.

Many of the important molecules in an organism are proteins:

• enzymes

• anti-bodies

• hormones

• structural constituents

• transport molecules
