Hermaphrodite

privit.jpg

A hermaphrodite is a species of organism in which an individual can fertilize itself. This means that the organism reproduces sexually but there is only one type of sex and one of an individual's gametes could quite possibly combine with another gamete from the same individual.

Some species of plant are hermaphrodites, including the box tree opposite, which has separate male and female flowers on the same tree.
