Crossing-over

evo_butt.jpg

Crossing-over is the process during meiosis in which the chromosomes of a diploid pair exchange genetic material. It is visible in the light microscope. At a genetic level, it produces recombination.

Occasionally the sequences of the two chromosomes are misalinged during crossing over. When this happens, unequal crossing-over is said to take place: it is one of processes responsible for duplication.
