Objectives:
Endothelial dysfunction is an important determinant of oxidative stress; adiponectin has also been linked to these processes. In this study we assessed relationship of serum adiponectin with oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes patients.
Materials:
We included 64 consecutive ambulatory type 2 diabetic patients. Exclusion criteria were diabetic kidney disease stage 45 and recent history of inflammatory/infectious diseases. Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) was determined as mean of three random morning urinary spot measurements.
Results:
Adiponectin was significantly correlated with uACR r=0.55, p<0.001; malondialdehyde (MDA) r=-0.28, p=0.03, HDL-cholesterol r=0.26, p=0.04; triglycerides r=-0.32, p=0.01 and abdominal circumferences r=-0.26, p=0.04. MDA was significantly correlated with glycated hemoglobin (HBA1c) r=0.40, p=0.0009; catalase r=-0.30, p=0.02 and systolic blood pressure (SBP) r=-0.28, p=0.03. In multiple linear regression MDA depended on adiponectin p=0.01, HBA1c p=0.003 and SBP p=0.05. We divided patients according to a cut-off (ROC curve) for adiponectin of 8.9mcg/ml. There was statistical significant difference between patients with adiponectin<=8.9mcg/ml (n=48) and patients with adiponectin>8.9mcg/ml for MDA (4.13±1.55nmol/ml vs. 2.92±0.79nmol/ml, p=0.005). Correlation between MDA and adiponectin was greater for patients with metabolic syndrome r=-0.32, p=0.03 (n=45), for patients with uACR>=30mg/g r=-0.56, p=0.004 (n=27), for patients with neuropathy r=-0.53, p=0.01 (n=21), for patients with glomerural filtration rate (eGFR/MDRD)<=60ml/min r=-0.58, p=0.02 (n=16). Correlation between MDA and adiponectin was not significant for patients with retinopathy r=-0.11, p=0.68 (n=17).
Conclusions:
Low level of oxidative stress correlated with high level of adiponectin in patients with diabetes type 2.
