TEACHING PHYSIOLOGY IN A TRADITIONAL CURRICULUM: PROS

Physiology teaching in a traditional setting corresponds to a step by step, topic based approach to the material in order to provide the necessary knowledge for the students to apprehend the basics of clinical studies. In Hungary this teaching system is predominant and it comprises regular, weekly series of lectures, lecture consultations and lab activities. Lectures are held for the whole class of 200- 250 people while consultations are conducted for smaller, combined groups of 40-50 students and both are provided by various experts in the actual field. Should further clarification of the lecture material needed, the remaining misunderstandings can be discussed during the lab time when tasks related to the current lecture material are performed in small groups of 15 students with a tutor assigned to this group for the semester. The type of lab tasks is varying from simulated experiments to real measurements on experimental animals or on fellow students. Towards the end of the curriculum integrative lectures and case reports discussions during the labs help to combine the structured knowledge into a comprehensive understanding. Thus, this method emphasizes the buildup of a firm structured background exploiting the advantage of a repetition based approach and facilitates a personal student-tutor relationship to provide customized advices to the assigned students. The practical usefulness of this traditional teaching method is firmly supported by feedbacks from both students and tutors involved in clinical curricula.
