INFLUENCE OF AUDITORY RHYTHM ON MOVEMENT PLANNING

Many sensorimotor activities require the integration of rhythm, spatial pattern, synchronization to external stimuli and body coordination (Brown et al. 2006). Neural systems, as cerebellum and basal ganglia, play a critical role in the timing of both movement and perception (Ivry, 1996, 2008). Typically sensorimotor coordination has been studied in the form of finger tapping to a sequence of auditory stimuli (Repp, 2005). In the present study, we explored whether auditory rhythm influenced spatial and temporal properties of movement. Eighteen blindfolded subjects participated in the experiment. The experimenter required participants to perform movements, at natural velocity, whose amplitude ranged from 1 to 24 cm, with steps of 1 cm. The movement was performed in absence (0 bpm) and in presence of auditory rhythm (300, 400 and 500 bpm). The kinematic parameters measured were: movement amplitude, time and mean velocity. The regression lines of movement amplitude, time and velocity as a function of the required amplitude were calculated for each subject. Slope and intercept values were submitted to ANOVAs whose main factor was auditory rhythm frequency. Velocity intercept values were influenced by and increased with rhythm frequency. The entrainment of movement to auditory rhythm suggests that internal timing system may be modulated by external timekeepers.
