ACTIVATION CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUNK MUSCLES DURING CYCLIC UPPER BODY PERTUBATIONS

Unspecific low back pain is related to disturbed muscle function. This includes corrupted co-ordination as well as increased fatigability. Rehabilitation programmes therefore have to consider both levels. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a newly developed tool (Propriomed®) for simultaneous trunk muscle co-ordination and strengthening training (core stabilisation). It consists of a bar, which can be put in oscillations. Oscillation frequencies can be adjusted by movably weights. 30 healthy volunteers were investigated while using the tool in horizontal and vertical directions, at three different frequencies(3, 3.5, 4.3 Hz). Surface EMG was taken from five trunk muscles from both sides. Any test situation evoked increased SEMG levels of all trunk muscles in relation to quiet standing. Increase of oscillation frequency in vertical direction lead to significant increase of rectus abdominis (RA) muscle amplitude, in horizontal direction of external oblique muscle amplitude. Coordination patterns changed with oscillation direction for RA, multifidus and erector spinae muscles, but not for both oblique abdominal muscles. Therefore, the tool exhibits relevant activation of all trunk muscles and different co-ordination patterns for back muscles. This can be used for specific training approaches and diagnostics.
