TOTAL BRAIN TISSUE SIALIC ACID LEVELS DUE TO PROGESTERONE EFFECT IN EXPERIMENTAL EPILEPSY

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder worldwide. Seizure activity is typically low when progestin levels are high and stable.Since epilepsy alters cellular interactions and connectivity, it is reasonable to propose that sialic acid levels can be affected by this pathological state or, alternately, by seizures.Total 80 mice have been separated into 8 groups. The groups were the sham group (group 1), control group (group 2), PTZ group (group 3), PTZ plus progesterone group (group 4), five dose progesterone group (group 5), single dose progesterone group (group 6), kindling group (group 7), and kindling plus progesterone group (group 8). Brains of each mice were extracted and were divided into 5 parts.The sialic acid levels were significantly different between groups. Subgroup analysis of the groups also revealed some statistically significant differences. Sialic acid levels were higher in the groups that have experimental epilepsy due to PTZ at convulsive or subconvulsive doses when compared to the other groups. Sialic acid levels were decreased in the groups that were given progesterone. Progesterone may have an anti-seizure effect with the additional finding of decreased sialic acid levels in progesterone given mice. Further studies are needed to evaluate the role of progesterone effects on sialic acid levels and its role in the pathogenesis.
