CORRELATION BETWEEN MULTIPLE CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS AND ENDOTHELIAL -DEPENDENT FLOW MEDIATED VASODILATION OF THE BRACHIAL ARTERY IN YOUNG ADULTS

Our study comprised one group of 60 apparently healthy medical students, 35 females and 25 males, with a mean age of 20 ± 2.25 years. CVD risk factors were assessed by the questionnaire method, the measurement of blood pressure, and the measurement of biochemical parameters such as plasma lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL -cholesterol, LDL -cholesterol, triglycerides). The flow mediated dilation (FMD) response was assessed by brachial artery ultrasound previously described in literature. Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the correlation between the FMD and CVD risk factors. The FMD response was moderately positively and significantly correlated with heredity (r = 0.26, p = 0.001), smoke (r = 0.48, p = 0.003). A strong correlation with plasmatic HDL-cholesterol level (r = 0.60, p < 0.001) was also obtained, but there was no correlation between FMD and blood pressure. The high prevalence of CVD risk factors and an earlier endothelial dysfunction identified by FMD, give further justification for the complex evaluation of CVD risk factors in young adults, and provide a rationale for both prevention and intervention.
