ASSESSMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY IN A PROBLEM-BASED CURRICULUM
Abstract number: SS1-6

Verheggen1 M, Snellen1 H, Schuwirth1 L

1University Maastricht, Dept. of Education and Research

In the introduction some basic principles of assessment will be discussed.

1.There should be congruence between training and assessment

2.Assessment should be continuous

3.Assessment should be comprehensive

4.Assessment should be formative and summative

5.There should be a strong quality control system of the assessment

In the second part of the presentation examples of the assessment of physiology in a problem-based curriculum (the new curriculum of the Maastricht Medical School) will be given. In the Maastricht curriculum both tailored course dependent and course independent assessment of physiology takes place. Course dependent assessment consists of end of course assessment and tailored assignments during the course. Course independent assessment is performed by a longitudinal form of assessment, a progress test at graduation level. In this test all disciplines are represented and the test is submitted to all students from all classes four times a year. The progress test results from the past ten years on basic sciences, including physiology, in the six classes of the Medical School will be presented. Furthermore, some examples of physiology assignments will be given and the experiences so far with tailored assignments during the course will be discussed.
