A TEMPUS project called Co.Le.M. (Community-Oriented and Learning-centered Education in Medical School) aimed to renew the medical curricula of some Universities of the Central/Eastern Europe (University of Bari-Coordinating Center; University of Limburg, Medical School; the Open University, Biology Department; Pécs University, Medical School; Semmelweis University, Medical School; University of Tirana). The last one was included also because it was newly instituted and it was considered easier to introduce the new methodologies in an actively developing environment. The methods used were Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Community-Based Education (CBE). Since 1988 also the Medical School of the University of Bari, as Associate Member of the Network of Community-Oriented Educational Institutions for Health Sciences, is experiencing this approach to medical education in a 'Parallel Experimental Curriculum'. Advantages but also several problems exist in implementing CBE and PBL in a "traditional" Medical School. They will be discussed. Since it has been already programmed the subdivision of the students of our Medical School in four different curricula, to overcome these problems we are thinking to include a very small group of students (no more than 40) in a curriculum exclusively
