Less physiological but more insights?

Analysis of experimental data for artificial lungs with mathematical models

Artificial membrane lungs (AMB) are also used in an extracorporeal circulation in treatment advanced sever lung diseaes. In contrast to physiological veno-arterial, a veno-venous bypass is used here; small percents of cardiac output (down to 10%) is led to AML in order to eliminate mainly CO2, thus mixed venous blood reachs an arterial CO2 value, the oxygenation of blood is acchieved by natural lung via diffusion. The theoretical modelling values predict the important relationships between blood flow rate through AMB and their CO2 elimination capacity and lower ventilation rates of the natural lung as a therapeutical tool.In another study the modelling is based on a left-left shunt (i.e. aortic-outflow and left atrial inflow ) with the AML inbetween, as an option for an implantable artificial lung. The experimental data show that these are in accordance to the model predicted values.
