objectgroup

Objects are items referred to within a document. Most commonly these items are Figures and Tables, which are usually defined within the objectgroup of the XML document.

<object position="floating" type="figure" id="f1">

of the study design and the patient numbers during follow-up. *Poor compliance
to triple therapy was defined as the consumption of less than 5 days of
medication due to severe intolerable adverse events. CRI, chronic renal
insufficiency; LCA, lansoprazole–clarithromycin–amoxicillin;
LCM, lansoprazole–clarithromycin–metronidazole.</span></p></legend></object>

Setting the position to "floating" will mean the objects will be accessible through thumbnails when viewed in the online version, rather than displaying directly on the page.

Inline objects

In the online version of an article, objects are sometimes required to appear directly in the article rather than via a thumbnail running alongside the main text.

example of an inline figure

Reproducing this exact format online would be impossible, but the object should be tagged so that the image will appear directly on the page, in between two paragraphs of text:-

<p>By Jonathan Silvertown &amp; Deborah Charlesworth. 4th edn.
347 &plus; viii pages. Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing, 2001. &pound;27.50 p/b.
ISBN 0632&nbsp;04991 X</p>

<p><object type="figure" position="fixed" id="fu1">
<objectsource>
<file name="nph_465_fu1.gif" type="gif"/></objectsource></object></p>

<p>Most population biologists and ecologists would be...

Note the attribute position="fixed". Tagged tables also can be used.

Where an image must appear within the actual paragraph, and there is no suitable entity to represent it, inline objects can again be utilised:-

inline object in paragraph

would be tagged:-

oocytes found in this gonad show degenerative features (<object
position="fixed" type="figure" id="fu1" format="inline"><objectsource>
<file name="jfb_074_fu1.gif" type="gif" id="fu1_source"/></objectsource>
</object>). Stromal cells occupy the majority of the gonad matrix.

MULTIPART OBJECTS

Where a single image file is not sufficient to fully display a figure or table image (the figure is continued over several pages in the PDF for example), several image files can be used for a single object. This is achieved using filegroup tagging:-

<object id="f5" type="figure" position="floating">
<objectsource>
<filegroup id="f5abc">
<file name="mmi_3415_f5a.gif" type="gif" id="f5a_source"/>
<file name="mmi_3415_f5b.gif" type="gif" id="f5b_source"/>
<file name="mmi_3415_f5c.gif" type="gif" id="f5c_source"/>
</filegroup>
</objectsource>

Note the filegroup id must differ from the object id.

When viewed in the online version, clicking on the thumbnail for this figure will bring up all three image files in the same pop-up window.

Where a tagged table is continued over several pages in the PDF, it should be tagged repiting tbl frame.
