Julian Baggini

Julian Baggini Julian Baggini is author, co-author or co-editor of several books on philosophy including Making Sense: Philosophy Behind the Headlines (Oxford University Press), New British Philosophy: The Interviews (Routledge), What Philosophers Think and Great Thinkers A-Z (both Continuum), Philosophy: Key Themes and Philosophy: Key Texts (Palgrave) and Atheism: A Very Short Introduction to Atheism (Oxford University Press).

Julian is the editor and co-publisher of The Philosophers’ Magazine, which he co-founded in 1997. A quarterly magazine for specialist and general readers, it has gained respect from top academic philosophers, who write for and are interviewed for the magazine. The magazine’s sister web site, TPM Online (www.philosophers.co.uk) is the most popular general interest philosophy site on the internet.

Julian has both an academic and journalistic background. He was awarded a PhD in philosophy from University College London in 1997 for his thesis on personal identity. However, he decided not to embark on an academic career and focused instead on The Philosophers’ Magazine. He has published as a freelance, with his reviews and comment pieces appearing in publications such as the Independent, Independent on Sunday, Times Educational Supplement and Prospect. He is also on the editorial board of and New Humanist and has a regular column in The Skeptic. He has recently written academic papers for the major journals Philosophy and Inquiry. From 1998-2001 he worked part-time, first as assistant editor and then as managing editor, at the Stakeholder, the public services bi-monthly. For this he interviewed many senior people in public life, such as the race and women’s equality commissioners.

He was invited to be among the first members the Humanist Philosophers Group, a forum of professional philosophers aiming ‘to promote a critical and rational approach to public ethical issues’. He is also on the editorial board of New Humanist magazine.

Julian is interested in bringing philosophy to a wider audience in exciting and innovative new ways. He works with TPM Online’s new media editor to produce interactive philosophy games and activities for the website and to develop a web-based critical thinking course for business, Thinking Tools.
