Each chapter is written by an authority in the field, in association with our editorial team.

Miles Hewstone is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Oxford, and is editor, with Frank Fincham and Jonathan Foster, of the highly successful introductory textbook Psychology, published by Blackwell in association with the British Psychological Society. He is series editor of the Blackwell Handbooks of Social Psychology and has published widely on the topics of social cognition and intergroup relations.

Wolfgang Stroebe has taught social psychology at universities in the UK, Germany and the USA and is now Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Utrecht. He is editor, with Miles Hewstone, of the European Review of Social Psychology. He has authored or co-authored five books and more than a hundred scientific articles and chapters on topics of social and health psychology.

Klaus Jonas has taught social and organizational psychology at universities in Germany and Austria, and is now Professor of Social and Business Psychology at the University of Zurich. He has authored research on attitude change, health psychology, intergroup relations and human resource management.

Contributing Authors

Hans W. Bierhoff is Professor of Social Psychology at the Ruhr-University Bochum.  He is currently chairman of the board of the Institute of Psychology Information (ZPID) at the University of Trier. He was previously vice-president of the German Psychological Association. He is author of Prosocial Behaviour and has written many scholarly books, chapters and articles on topics in social psychology.

Felix C. Brodbeck is Chair of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Aston Business School, Aston University, and future Chair of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich. His main research interests are leadership, group performance, collective information processing, diversity and cross-cultural psychology. He has edited or authored several books, including Culture and Leadership Acrossthe World, and numerous research papers.

Abraham (Bram) P. Buunk is Academy Professor of Evolutionary Social Psychology on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences at the University of Groningen. He has published widely on the role of social comparison and social exchange processes in applied settings. His current research focuses on the evolutionary and biological background of social behaviour, in particular intrasexual competition and mate selection.

Dr. Pieternel Dijkstra is a freelance psychologist, researcher and writer. She has published widely on the topics of jealousy and relationship satisfaction. Her current research focuses on relationship quality and the role of humour and physical attractiveness in intimate relationships.

Geoffrey Haddock is a Reader in Social Psychology at Cardiff University. He has published widely on the topics of attitudes and social cognition. His current research focuses on affective processes of evaluation.

Thomas Kessler is Professor of Social Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Exeter. His main research interests are in intergroup relations and the explicit negative treatment of outgroups, as well as evolutionary approaches to intergroup phenomena. He has published several articles and book chapters.

Barbara Krahé is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Potsdam, Germany. Her research focuses on aggression and social cognition applied to legal decision-making. She is a council member of the International Society for Research on Aggression and co-editor of its journal, Aggressive Behavior.

Carmen Lebherz is Assistant Professor at the Psychology Department of the University of Zurich. She is currently interested in person perception, particularly in the effectiveness of impression management tactics.

Gregory R. Maio is a Professor of Social Psychology at Cardiff University. He has published widely on the topics of attitudes and social cognition. His current research focuses on the mental structure of social values.

Antony S.R. Manstead is Professor of Psychology at Cardiff University, having held positions at the Universities of Sussex, Manchester, Amsterdam and Cambridge. He has been president of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology and editor of the British Journal of Social Psychology. He is currently associate editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His research focuses on emotion.

Robin Martin is Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at Aston Business School, Aston University, Birmingham. He has served on the faculties of the Universities of Sheffield, Swansea, Cardiff and Queensland (Brisbane, Australia). He conducts research in the area of social influence processes (especially majority and minority influence), workplace leadership, innovation and team working.

Amélie Mummendey is Professor of Social Psychology in the Institute of Psychology, Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Her key research topic is group conflict and cooperation.

Bernard A. Nijstad is Associate Professor of Organizational Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. His main research interests are group creativity and group decision-making.

Brian Parkinson lectures at Oxford University. His research focuses on the interpersonal causes, effects and functions of emotion. His books include Ideas and Realities of Emotion (1995) and (with Fischer and Manstead) Emotion in Social Relations (2005).
