Estimating the underlying change in unemployment in the UK, by A. Harvey and C.-H. Chung
Journal of the Royal Statistics Society, Series A, Statistics in Society, Volume 163 (2000), Part 3

There are eight files: GBSa.dat, GBUnSa.dat, UKSa.dat and UKUnSa.dat, gbunsa.xls, uksa.xls, ukunsa.xls and gbsa.xls.  These are seasonally adjusted and seasonally unadjusted for GB and similarly for the UK.

The three columns in the GB files are as follows:
1) Monthly observations on claimant counts
2) Annual and then quarterly observations on ILO unemployment (LFS)
3) As in 2, but monthly rolling averages instead of just quarterly.

The first set of observations for adjusted data is 1971m2, the last 1999m5.

The unadjusted data starts in 1975m2.

Unavailable observations are denoted -9999.99

There are no annual observations for the UK and only two columns.

The second column corresponds to the third column in GB.

It should be noted that some of the models in the paper were estimated using earlier data sets and some of the seasonally adjusted figures may have been revised.

Updates of these data are available from the Office for National Statistics. Please contact David Hastings on 020 7533 6087
