Modelling species diversity through species level hierarchical modelling, by A. E. Gelfand et al
Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series C, Applied Statistics, Volume 54 (2005) part 1, 1-20

Explanation of Data:
The file "khdata23species" is a whitespace delimited text file that contains the species presence-absence data and site level covariates that are used to fit the model described in the paper. Each row corresponds to one 1 x 1 minute grid cell in the study region (1554 total cells). The columns are as follows:

MESHCODE -- unique grid cell identifier
NUMSAMPLES -- number of sample locations within the grid cell
Columns 3 through 25 -- species observation data: each column contains the number of sample locations in each grid cell at which the corresponding species was observed
XNEW -- longitude of northwest corner of the grid cell in digital degrees (east)
YNEW -- latitude of northwest corner of the grid cell in digital degrees (south)
MAP -- mean annual precipitation (mm)
JULMINT -- July (winter) minimum temperature (degrees centigrade)
JANMAXT -- January (summer) maximum temperature (degrees centigrade)
PPTCV -- coefficient of interannual variation in precipitation (mm)
ALT -- elevation (metres above mean sea level)
