What were the first cells like?

"The first cells . . . of course we don't know what they where really like. The fossil record begins with prokaryotic organisms. They look very similar to prokaryotic oraganisms that exist today, and we know that the eukaryotic organisms arose later. So the first cells were some kind of precursor to the prokaryotic lineage."
