What is the unit of selection?

"We now understand that the unit of selection is the gene. It must be the gene because that is the only unit that has the properties that one needs for natural selection to work on it: it needs to be self-replicating; it needs to replicate with occasional 'errors' so that selection can work on it; and it needs to produce properties that themselves influence the survival or extinction of that replicating unit."
