The idea of a species - Do species really exist?

"There has been much discussion over the years as to whether species actually exist in nature outside the minds of taxonomists.

My own view is that they do exist outside of our minds. They exist by virtue of the evolutionary process, by virtue of the fact that lineages go along through time and split and evolve independently and then split again, and that is how we get the tree of life."
