Galapagos landscape

galapogos.jpg

The Galapagos drought of 1977 (left) caused the finch population to collapse from about 1200 to about 180 individuals. In 1983, exceptionally heavy rainfall covered the landscape in vegetation (right), and the finches flourished. The effects of these extreme weather conditions on the evolution of the finch population has been thoroughly studied. Courtesy of Peter and Nicola Grant
