In meiosis, each chromosome duplicates and the copy lies alongside itself.

The identical pair lines up against the corresponding pair of homologous chromosomes.

Cross-over then takes place at a random point: one chromosome from each pair swaps genetic material.

After this the two pairs divide into four single chromosomes, each of which will go on to form a different gamete.
