Meiosis

evo_butt.jpg

Meiosis is the process of cell division in which gametes, or sex cells, are made. In contrast to normal cell division, known as mitosis, the double set of genes and chromosomes of the diploid cells is reduced during meiosis to a single haploid set.

It is during meiosis that crossing-over and hence recombination occur. The animation illustrates the process.
