"Heritability is the word that is used particularly for quantative traits - ones that are controlled by genetic variation at a lot of gene loci - which are typically affected by environmental variation of various kinds. We are talking about characters that have a normal frequency distribution where you cannot put the population into arbitrary categories. Those characters nonetheless do have a genetic basis in almost all cases and heritability is the word used to describe it."
