Fossils

"Which species are going to fossilize? Normally it is those which have hard, robust skeletons either on the outside, like a trilobite or a clam, or on the inside like us humans which have bones surrounded by flesh. But it is important to realise that there is a whole gradation of possibilities, and in very special circumstances - such as the Burgess Shale - you can even have soft tissues preserved in ways which we do not fully understand."

Simon Conway Morris
