Construction of the phylogenetic supertree
The phylogenetic supertree was constructed using the angiosperm phylogeny of Nandi et al. (1998: Fig. 4) as a backbone. For relationships within orders or families treated as monophyletic units in that study the following sources were used: Bremer (1994; Asteraceae), Caputo & Cozzolino (1994; Dipsacaceae), Chase et al. (1995; Monocotyledonae), Chase et al. (1993; Gentianales), Díez & Valdés (1991; Boraginaceae), Downie et al. (1997; Caryophyllaceae, but Silene-Lychnis from Desfeux and Lejeune 1996), Downie et al. (2000; Apiaceae), Eriksson et al. (1998; Rosaceae), Kron et al. (1999; Ericales), Johansson (1995 and Ro et al. 1997; Ranunculaceae), Natali et al. (1995; Rubiaceae), Soltis & Soltis (2000; Scrophulariales, but dePamphilis et al. 1997 and Bolliger & Molau 1992 for hemiparasites in that clade), Starr et al. (1999; Carex), Wink & Kaufmann (1996; Lamiaceae), Zunk et al. (1999; Brassicaceae, tribal membership according to Al-Shehbaz 1984). For Poaceae a strict supertree (sensu Sanderson et al. 1998) was constructed from Grebenstein et al. (1998) and Soreng & Davis (1998) with the Darbyshire & Warwick (1992) phylogeny for Festuca and Vulpia grafted onto it. For Fabaceae a strict supertree was build based on Doyle et al. (1997) and Sanderson & Wojciechowski (1996) with the relationship of Anthyllis according to Polhill 1981. The Vicia phylogeny of Potokina et al. (1999) was grafted onto this three, and subgeneric taxonomy taken from Kupicha (1976).
