Eriksson, O & Jakobsson, A (1998) Abundance, distribution and life histories of grassland plants: a comparative study of 81 species. Appendix 1

The investigated species (in alphabetical order) and some characteristics used in analyses. Nomenclature is according to Lid (1985). S = seed number, SW = seed weight (mg), PW = plant weight (g), C = clonality, D = seed dispersal, L = life span categories, and G = geographic range size. Seed number refers to average seed number from seven "individuals" from each species. Seed weight refers to weight of germinules, whether morphologically seeds or fruits. Those marked with * are from Grime et al. (1988). All other values are based on individually weighed seeds, sampled from the study area. Plant weight refers to average dry weight of seven "individuals" from each species. Under C , (1) denotes non-clonal and (2) clonal plants. Under D, (1) denotes unassisted seed dispersal and (2) assisted seed dispersal (adhesive, wind or endozoochory). Life span categoriesare: (1) annuals and biennials, (2) perennials without extensive clonal growth, and (3) perennials with extensive clonal growth, or woody plants. Some clonal plants were classified into life span category 2, if it was considered unlikely that they are very long-lived. This classification is admittedly arbitrary in some cases. Geographic range size was based on Hultén & Fries (1986), and measured in grid-units (1 unit = c. 193 600 km2)
