Blackwell Publishing

Community and Environment

Blackwell Publishing is committed to being a responsible industry partner and working to help empower the global community. We strive to support initiatives that align with our mission to advance knowledge and learning.

Below are some of the initiatives in which we actively participate.

Initiatives to Improve Access in the Developing World

HINARI (Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative)
Blackwell is a founding member of HINARI, managed by the World Health Organization and now part of the UNs Millennium Development Goals. HINARI provides online access to journals covering medicine, nursing, and related health and social sciences in developing countries. A member of Blackwell serves as the Marketing Manager for HINARI.

AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture)
AGORA provides online access to journals in agriculture, food science, and related fields. The goal of the initiative is to increase the quality and effectiveness of agricultural research, education, and training in developing countries. AGORA is managed by the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization.

INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications)
INASP operates the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) which strengthens research capacities in developing countries by reinforcing local efforts to produce, disseminate and gain access to scholarly information and knowledge. Through this program, all of Blackwell journals are available at a reduced rate to academic institutions in select developing countries. A member of Blackwell serves as the Chairman of the Trustees for INASP.

BookLink
Blackwell partnered with BookLink, a project aimed at supplying books to Ethiopian schools, to donate medical student text books to all five medical schools in Ethiopia. This donation will aid Book Link in furthering the education of Ethiopias future doctors and nurses.

Commitment to the Environment

Blackwell is dedicated to protecting the environment and has become the first global publisher to become CarbonNeutral, an initiative aimed at mitigating carbon dioxide emissions. Blackwell has pledged not only to neutralize the effects of CO2 emissions from its office operations but also on all global product shipments. To offset these emissions, Blackwell is supporting a variety of renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable forestry projects in India, Sri Lanka, Mexico and Scotland.

As part of this commitment, Blackwell enlists the support of suppliers to develop sound environmental practices, uses resources in an environmentally responsible manner, and fosters environmental responsibility among employees.

Corporate Contributions

Blackwell supports local communities around the world where Blackwell employees work and live. The Charitable Donations Committees analyze the diverse needs within their communities and make careful decisions on the programs for which Blackwell will be able to provide support. Priority is usually given to organizations with missions that align with Blackwells mission, goals and employee interests.

Supporting Employee Philanthropy

Blackwell encourages employee community involvement through:

  • Blackwell Matching Gifts Program: contributing to non-profit organizations that employees support
  • Blackwell Volunteers: creating opportunities for employees to actively address social needs
