Blackwell - The First Publisher To Become CarbonNeutral®
Every organization contributes to carbon dioxide emissions simply by operating daily. It is scientifically known that increasing levels of CO2 emissions are causing dramatic climate changes which are potentially the most serious threat facing the global environment today.
Blackwell Publishing decided to take action and opted to be a CarbonNeutral organization, the first major publisher to invest in this crucial pro environment move. We hope that others too, will do the same in the industry.
For this project, Blackwell worked with The CarbonNeutral Company to identify our carbon footprint, the approximate volume of CO2 generated by the organization. It is calculated by assessing energy usage, business travel, and all components of the companys operations that consume power or generate waste and by-products.
Next, we explored ways to reduce this footprint and energy use wherever possible, like the viability of using green suppliers or energy from renewable resources. Finally in order to neutralize unavoidable CO2 emissions, we are supporting a range of offset projects, i.e. sustainable forestry, renewable energy or energy efficiency projects that will absorb or save the same amount of CO2 emissions as are created by Blackwell.
Blackwell Publishing is now a global CarbonNeutral organization as we have included product movements in our own carbon footprint, instead of just leaving this to courier companies. Blackwell is blazing the trail by moving journal manufacturing to Singapore and has worked with our partners to reduce the environmental impact of this move.
