Part I
Introduction to Neurobiology

Assignment 1  (Chapter 1)
Human diseases that affect motor neurons and the neuromuscular junction -- the motor components of the patellar reflex -- produce potentially devasting symptoms in patients afflicted by the disease.  Three such diseases are myasthenia gravis, myasthenic syndrome, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

What aspect of the reflex loop is affected in each of these human diseases?
What molecular component is affected in each case?
Pick one of the three diseases and write a 150-word report on the scientific history of how the molecular target was identified.

Assignment 2  (Chapter 2)
The process of gastrulation is an important transition from a single cell layer to three layers in vertebrate embryos. Find videos or animated movies that illustrate the three-dimensional movement of cells during gastrulation.

Assignment 3  (Chapter 2)
Locate sources that provide atlases of primate and rodent brains and use these resources to become familiar with the overall structure of these brains.
