New Author Self-Archiving Policy
Blackwell Publishing recognizes the importance of the Open Access debate for scholarly communications and its aim to deliver unrestricted access to academic research to all those who seek it. As the world's leading society publisher, Blackwell has a responsibility to ensure that viable high quality society publishing continues to flourish. As well as making an active contribution to the OA debate, we have also made a public commitment to support Open Access models which contribute to this goal. This now includes allowing the author to retain the copyright of their Article while granting Blackwell exclusive rights to publish it. The author may also self-archive their final version of the Article on personal websites or institutional repositories, while providing a link to the definitive published version for users to refer to.

30 journals have opted to offer their authors open access through the Online Open service. Online Open was launched as a service to Blackwell Publishing journals in February. It offers authors the opportunity to make their articles freely available to all users of the internet in perpetuity on payment of a publication fee.
The new Online Open service will be on trial through to the end of 2006. During this period, authors of accepted articles in these journals will have the option to pay a fee of US$2500 or £1250 (plus VAT where applicable) which will ensure that their article is made freely accessible to all via the online journals platform Blackwell Synergy . Online Open articles will be published to exactly the same high standards as subscription-based articles, following the full peer-review process and benefiting from the same production procedures and online features.
“We're are pleased that these key medical and life sciences journals have chosen to innovate in this way and participate in the trial” said Bob Campbell, President of Blackwell Publishing. He also pointed out the large number of journal editorial boards which had, however, chosen not to participate in the Online Open trial, preferring instead to wait and see whether author-pays open access would ‘take off' before committing to it. “As the largest society publisher we are committed to consultation with our society partners and journal editorial boards. We've found that many either felt that their author self-archiving and free backfile policies already met the demands for open access, or that the communities in which they operate would not have the funding to support an author-pays service like Online Open . A couple of societies expressed concern that offering author-pays open access might diminish the status of their journal.”
The 30 journals which have so far chosen to participate in the Online Open trial are:

Society Spotlight - The International Union of Crystallography
This month we highlight one of our society publishing partners, The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). IUCr has operated as a not-for-profit learned-society publisher for over half a century. Its high-quality journals, Acta Crystallographica Sections A-F , Journal of Applied Crystallography and Journal of Synchrotron Radiation , are published in association with Blackwell Publishing and are available electronically through Crystallography Journals Online ( http://journals.iucr.org ) and Blackwell Synergy ( www.blackwell-synergy.com ).
Crystallography, the study of molecular and crystalline structure, is a cross-disciplinary science. The elucidation by X-ray crystallography of the structure of DNA is acknowledged as one of the milestones of 20th-century science; more recently, fullerene chemistry, high-temperature superconductors and the design of antiviral AIDS medication are among the topics in which crystallography has played a vital role. Selected IUCr journal articles reporting important breakthroughs are highlighted in each issue of the IUCr Newsletter, a quarterly publication distributed in print format to 587 libraries and 15,000 crystallographers and other interested individuals in 39 countries.
Items on other topics of interest to librarians, such as the online availability of the complete catalogue of IUCr journals back to 1948, features that add value to the journals, the IUCr's open-access and archiving policies and its Journal Grants Fund also appear in the Newsletter. To view the latest issue online, please go to http://www.iucr.org/iucr-top/news/index.html . If you wish to receive a free copy of the IUCr Newsletter in your library, please send an e-mail to patti@hwi.buffalo.edu
Journal of Fish Biology Now Available Online Back to 1993
We are pleased to announce that the Journal of Fish Biology now has backfiles on Blackwell Synergy dating back to 1993 (Volume 42). This journal transferred to Blackwell from Elsevier in 2003 and since that time we have been working with the Fisheries Society of the British Isles to make the backfiles available on Blackwell Synergy .
The Journal of Fish Biology is a leading international journal for scientists engaged in all aspects of fish and fisheries research, both freshwater and marine. The journal publishes high-quality papers relevant to the central theme of fish biology and aims to bring together under one cover an overall picture of the research in progress and to provide international communication among researchers in many disciplines with a common interest in the biology of fish.
