We are pleased to inform you about the journals purchasing models from Blackwell Publishing for 2005. We are working on increasing the variety and flexibility of these models in order to meet customer demands and have several experimental pilot schemes in place. If you have any questions or would like further information about any of these models, please contact your nearest Journal Sales Team Representative
1. Choice of standard, premium + print, or premium online subscriptions on individual titles.- Standard subscriptions are at the list price and include print + online access to current and previous year’s content.
- Premium + print subscriptions are at 10% above the list price and include print + access to all available online volumes, including legacy issues and OnlineEarly articles. This level also includes archival rights to paid-for content.
- Premium online-only subscriptions are at 95% of the list price and include the premium access rights outlined above
2. Collection of Blackwell Publishing journals across all subject areas. Libraries can also choose to purchase the Science and Medicine Collection or the Social Science and Humanities Collection. New and transfer journals are included on a limited two-year trial basis. This is the most popular option for larger institutions and we have over 1500 customers worldwide.
- New for 2005: all customers can now make savings by switching their standard or premium + print subscriptions into premium online-only subscriptions at the 95% rate.
3.Upgrade to premium access of new trial journals at a 50% discount.
- Consortia customers can take advantage of a 50% discount on journals under 5 years old which are only included in the Consortia on a trial basis. Customers should upgrade to premium access at the 50% discount for new journals, and at the full rate for transfer journals, in order to secure archival rights and gain access to legacy content.
4.‘Flip’ pricing – A model which ‘flips’ the tradition of purchasing print plus a top-up fee for online access and makes the electronic fee the base price, with additional charges for print subscriptions. It is a centrally invoiced, multi-year deal with capped annual price increases and the option of discounted print subscriptions. This model is in pilot stage only and is subject to change.
- Available to agreed centrally managed large consortia only for 2005.
5.‘Core Plus’ – A usage-based pricing model with a core list of subscriptions plus pay per view access to the remaining titles. This model is in pilot stage only and is subject to change.
- Available to agreed pilot sites only for 2005.
6.Subject bundles available across the spectrum, from law to veterinary medicine, nursing to agriculture. Journals in the chosen bundle are available as premium online subscriptions.
- Suitable for specialist organizations wishing to expand their online access in a defined subject area.
7.Article bundles available for companies wishing to be charged in bulk for the articles used in their organization. Online access is charged per article downloaded and the invoice can be provided either before or following the use.
- New for 2005: Available to corporate customers wishing to set up an account.
8.Single article purchases – Customers may purchase instant access for 30 days to individual articles using their credit card. This service is available for users of Blackwell Synergy.

Blackwell Publishing has signed an agreement with the four main library consortia in Canada to enable higher education institutions across the country to gain online access to peer-reviewed journals at a negotiated rate.
The deal, signed with the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL), the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL), the Council of Atlantic University Libraries (CAUL), and Conférence des Recteurs et des Principaux des Universités du Québec (CREPUQ), is available to institutions in every province and is aimed at bringing together the collective buying power and research needs of the nation’s scholarly community.
Already 26 universities from across Canada have taken advantage of the offer for 2004. This compares to 8 Canadian universities who had access to the complete Blackwell Publishing online journals collection prior to the signing of the four consortia agreement. With more than 70 higher education institutions in Canada we hope that more librarians within the consortia will choose to take part in the agreement over the coming months.
Any institution that is a member of OCUL, COPPUL, CAUL, or CREPUQ is entitled to participate in this Blackwell Publishing agreement for access to online journals. University libraries wishing to participate should contact their consortia representative directly, or email heather.blaine@bos.blackwellpublishing.com

Blackwell Publishing carried out a survey with ALPSP (Association of Learned Professional and Scholarly Publishers) on what societies do with their publishing surpluses. There were 68 respondents to the questionnaire.
Most respondents subsidise the supply of journals to members in some way. Equal numbers said they provide their journal free of charge or at a reduced price; only three respondents offer their journal at full price.
Surplus was defined as the amount of journal subscription and other revenue, after covering costs related to publishing the journal, which the society is able to use for other activities.
With societies that do their own publishing the average surplus is 18% of journal revenue which is an average 32% of the society’s income. With societies that use a publisher journal revenue is on average 33% of the society’s income.
Overall, respondents spend their surplus as a contribution to the general expenses of the organization, followed by re-investment in publishing, subsidy of conference fees and the subsidy of membership subscription. Those that do their own publishing rank re-investment in publishing second, while those that contract out rank this lower (5=). Those that contract out rank subsidy of conferences second, while those that do their own publishing rank this lower (5=). Research grants, bursaries, and reserves and endowments ranked lower. Those that self-publish rank public education third, while those that contract out rank it much lower (8).
Other activities mentioned under ‘other’ included:
Organizations that self-publish seem to spend more on reserves and endowments while those that contract out seem to spend more on research grants.
In the current debate on Open Access, the importance of journal profits to societies has been mentioned and indeed the right to make such profits has sometimes been questioned. This survey shows the significance of journals in the finances of societies and the benefits to members who use the journals.
A new initiative launched last month that enables users to search the full text of high-quality, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and other resources using the power of Google. Called CrossRef Search (or XRS), this new pilot programme utilizes the collaborative environment of CrossRef, the reference-linking service for scholarly publishing, and Google search technologies. All articles on Blackwell Synergy are included in the service, as is the content of eight other participating publishers.
The CrossRef Search pilot will run throughout 2004 to evaluate functionality and to gather feedback from scientists, scholars and librarians for the purpose of fine-tuning the program. CrossRef is also in discussion with other search engines.
