Wiley-Blackwell is a market-leading presence in the social sciences and humanities, publishing books and journals in most of the major subject areas, spanning the entire spectrum of subdisciplines.

A Labor of Love? Editing a Major Reference Work

A photo of George Ritzer George Ritzer
Editor, The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology and BEOS Online.

George Ritzer, describes the Herculean task of editing the recently published 11 volume Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology and tells us why the sociology community needs such a resource: For several decades, I have been editing various types of books (as well as a journal), a diversion from the far more arduous task of writing books. I assumed, when I took it on, that editing The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology would not be much different from previously edited anthologies, companions and handbooks. I was also buoyed by the fact that I edited a much less ambitious Encyclopedia of Social Theory (only two volumes) in 2005 and that task had not proven much more difficult than previous editing experiences. How wrong I was.

Dealing with close to 1800 entries, and only a slightly smaller number of authors, to say nothing of 33 Advisory Editors, made for a very different, and infinitely more complex, task than I had ever experienced or even imagined. Instead of a set of tasks I could handle during breaks from writing and teaching, it came to take over my work-life, and even my personal-life, for nearly two years. I always had what appeared to be mountains, of drafts of entries to read (or reread).

There was a clear need for a new encyclopedia of sociology. The previous one had been done in the early 1990s and had undergone a minor revision in 2000. It was not only comparatively brief (5 volumes), but also was, in the main, a reflection of a sociology of an earlier era. What was needed was a more contemporary encyclopedia that reflected late 20th and early 21st century sociology. Also needed was a much longer encyclopedia that dealt with the discipline in much greater breadth (over 30 different areas are covered in the Blackwell Encyclopedia) and depth (in many cases, at least fifty entries were written covering major topics in each of those areas; in one case there were nearly 100 entries for a single area). This breadth and depth makes The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology a near-exhaustive overview of the state-of-the-art in sociology.

A great emphasis was placed on being absolutely up-to-date by choosing the latest topics in the field and having them written by authors intimately associated with them. However, classical ideas, theories and methods, were certainly not ignored. Sociology has not outgrown its classical roots and it continues to draw sustenance from them. The classical entries are not “museum” pieces, but rather living topics of concern and interest that continue to inform sociology today.

The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology is now a physical reality and, on the surface, it would seem that work on it, especially my work, is complete. However, that is far from the case as it lives on in BEOS Online. We are already well into the process of creating lists of new entries and lining up authors to write them. Why new entries? After all, the bound version of the Encyclopedia was published only a few months ago.

For one thing, even the nearly 1800 entries, 10 volumes (plus an 11th devoted to the index), 6000 pages, and 3.5 million words does not come anywhere close to exhausting what could be written about sociology and included in the Encyclopedia. For another, sociology continues to develop and expand with the emergence of new concepts, ideas, theories, methods and the like, and they need to be added to the resource. Then there is the fact that areas already covered by entries continue to develop and those entries need to be revised and updated to reflect changes. Finally, we made a decision to include entries in the encyclopedia only on deceased sociologists (based on the belief that in at least some cases the passage of time was needed in order to decide whether inclusion was warranted). One result of that decision is that as time passes, and with life being as it is, new possibilities for entries are presenting themselves on a regular basis. For example, since the completion of the bound version of the encyclopedia, such notables as Jacques Derrida, John Kenneth Galbraith, Betty Friedan and Jean Baudrillard have died. The result is that entries on them will be added in regular updates to BEOS Online.

The BEOS Online logo There is, of course, already a great deal of information available such as a wikipedia on many of the topics covered in the Encyclopedia. Why, then, should one consult BEOS Online rather than other sources? For one thing, all entries are vetted by the Editor and in the case of the original entries in the bound volume, by an Advisory Editor, as well. Thus, one who consults BEOS Online can have greater assurance of the quality of the material found there, as well as of its veracity. For another, each entry is part of a broader and more systematic treatment of sociology than is available anywhere else. Thus, it is the totality of what is available, as well as the interrelationship among all the entries (as made clear by systematic cross-referencing), that differentiates the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology and BEOS Online from every other alternative on, or off, the Internet.

The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology online is available either by annual subscription or as a one-time purchase with an annual fee covering hosting and updates.

Blackwell Synergy Release Update

Last month we've added some new features that we hope you find useful when using Blackwell Syngergy.

CAS (ChemPort) reference links – Links to Chemical Abstracts Services (Chemport) will now be included in reference lists of selected journals.

Related Articles – A Related Articles link has been introduced for STM journals. Related articles are generated by an algorithm that determines the relatedness of terminology across content. We will be extending this feature to all journals later in the year.

Recommended Articles – Blackwell Synergy will now use “collaborative filtering” to generate article recommendations based on user behaviour. These “user-generated” recommendations are in two forms:

  1. “Users who read this article also read articles x and y”These recommendations will appear on abstract/full text pages.
  2. Personalized recommendations based on an individual’s and similar individuals’ usage history. Users must be registered and logged on to Synergy and the recommendations will appear in their My Synergy section.

Editor Commentaries – We have created a facility for journal editors to add commentaries to articles of particular interest. Commentaries will highlight the important points of articles and/or provide context for an article, thereby adding value to the online version. This feature is in pilot with a small number of journals. These commentaries will be separate entities linked to from the table of contents and abstract/full text.

COUNTER Journal Report 1a – This report provides data of archive (legacy) usage. The report is identical in format to Journal Report 1, but only usage of legacy issues is reported (whereas JR1 reports on current and legacy usage). Legacy issues are all issues published before 1997.

Shibboleth – Blackwell Synergy is now compliant with the Shibboleth protocol. Shibboleth is a single sign-on authentication system that allows users to login to Synergy with their institution’s credentials, and allows institutions to centralize their federated authentication program. Implementation is dependent on institution participation.

In a world of 24 hour news cycles and increasingly specialized knowledge, the Blackwell Public Philosophy series takes seriously the idea that there is a need and demand for engaging and thoughtful discussion of topics of broad public importance. Philosophy itself is historically grounded in the public square, bringing people together to try to understand the various issues that shape their lives and give them meaning. This “love of wisdom”- the essence of philosophy- lies at the heart of the series. Written in an accessible, jargon-free manner by internationally renowned authors, each book is an invitation to the world beyond news flashes and sound bites and into public wisdom.

The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series

Series Editor(s): William Irwin

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and a healthy helping of popular culture clears the cobwebs from Kant. Philosophy has had a bad public relations problem for a few centuries now. This series aims to change that, showing that philosophy is relevant to your life - and not just for answering the big questions like "To be or not to be?" but for answering the little questions, "To watch or not to watch South Park?" Thinking deeply about TV, movies, and music doesn't make you a "complete idiot." In fact it might make you a philosopher, someone who believes the unexamined life is not worth living and the unexamined cartoon is not worth watching.
