Molecular Microbiology, the leading primary journal in microbial sciences, publishes research articles reporting the results of molecular studies of eukaryotic microorganisms and of prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and their viruses. Studies that include genetic, biochemical, biophysical, bioinformatic and structural analysis leading to a deeper understanding of the molecular principals underlying basic physiological processes or mechanisms are considered as potentially suitable for publication in the journal. Topics considered appropriate include:
- Gene expression and regulation
- Pathogenicity and virulence
- Physiology and metabolism
- Synthesis of macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, polysaccharides, etc.)
- Cell biology and subcellular organization
- Membrane biogenesis and function
- Traffic and transport
- Cell-cell communication and signalling pathways
- Evolution and gene transfer

NIH-funded authors and Molecular Microbiology Online Content Now Available Back to Volume 1 Molecular Microbiology one of the 'hottest journals of the millennium'! Microbial Pathogensis: Mechanisms of Infectious Disease Faculty of 1000
From April 2008, the NIH is mandating grant-holders to deposit their published papers in PubMed Central within 12 months of publication. Molecular Microbiology complies with the NIH mandate in allowing authors to post the accepted version of their article, i.e. the version incorporating any amendments made during peer review, 12 months after publication (please see the 'After acceptance' bullet points on page 1 of the Exclusive License Form for full details). In doing so authors will be meeting the terms of their grant.
As an alternative, NIH-funded authors may use the Online Open service. This service grants free and immediate availability of the article on publication, and deposition of the final pdf version with PubMed Central.

Molecular Microbiology now publishes OnlineEarly papers - fully reviewed and revised articles published online in advance of publication in a forthcoming printed issue. Click here to view OnlineEarly articles
