ISI Journal Citation Reports® Ranking: 2007: 10/94 (Microbiology); 43/263 (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology)
Impact Factor: 5.462

Molecular Microbiology, the leading primary journal in microbial sciences, publishes research articles reporting the results of molecular studies of eukaryotic microorganisms and of prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and their viruses.  Studies that include genetic, biochemical, biophysical, bioinformatic and structural analysis leading to a deeper understanding of the molecular principals underlying basic physiological processes or mechanisms are considered as potentially suitable for publication in the journal. Topics considered appropriate include:

  • Gene expression and regulation
  • Pathogenicity and virulence
  • Physiology and metabolism
  • Synthesis of macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, polysaccharides, etc.)
  • Cell biology and subcellular organization
  • Membrane biogenesis and function
  • Traffic and transport
  • Cell-cell communication and signalling pathways
  • Evolution and gene transfer

TopNews and Announcements

NIH-funded authors and Molecular Microbiology
From April 2008, the NIH is mandating grant-holders to deposit their published papers in PubMed Central within 12 months of publication. Molecular Microbiology complies with the NIH mandate in allowing authors to post the accepted version of their article, i.e. the version incorporating any amendments made during peer review, 12 months after publication (please see the 'After acceptance' bullet points on page 1 of the Exclusive License Form for full details). In doing so authors will be meeting the terms of their grant.

As an alternative, NIH-funded authors may use the Online Open service. This service grants free and immediate availability of the article on publication, and deposition of the final pdf version with PubMed Central.

Early View now available
Molecular Microbiology now publishes Early View papers - fully reviewed and revised articles published online in advance of publication in a forthcoming printed issue. Click here to view Early View articles

Online Content Now Available Back to Volume 1
Free access to all articles online 18 months after publication. Content published prior to 1997 is available online and can be purchased by institutions for a one-off fee. For further information on how to access these issues please visit our Librarian Site.

Prizes awarded by Molecular Microbiology
Molecular Microbiology is keen to support the microbiology research community and regularly awards poster prizes at selected conferences. Winners receive a year's free online subscription to Molecular Microbiology and a prize cheque.

In 2008, Molecular Microbiology will award poster prizes at the following conference:

Molecular Biology of Archaea
St. Andrews, UK, 19-21 August, 2008

Winning poster:Genetic tools for Sulfolobus acidocaldarius
By Silvia Berkner, Malgozarta Ajon, Sonja-Verena Albers, and Georg Lipps

Molecular Parasitology Meeting
Woods Hole, Massachussetts, September 21-25, 2008

Faculty of 1000
Faculty of 1000 is a new online assessment service of research papers - a qualitative and quantitative peer review.
Molecular Microbiology has been ranked ninth in a list of Microbiology journals based on the numbers of its papers being awarded either of Faculty of 1000's top two ratings.

Free Access in the Developing World
Free online access to this journal is available within institutions in the developing world through the HINARI initiative with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the OARE Initiative (Online Access to Research in the Environment) with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Online Open
Authors of articles in this journal can now choose to make their articles open access and available free for all readers through the payment of an author fee. Read more.
