First published in 1952, the Journal of Industrial Economics has a wide international circulation and is recognised as a leading journal in the field. It was founded to promote the analysis of modern industry, particularly the behaviour of firms and the functioning of markets. Contributions are welcomed in all areas of industrial economics including:

  • organization of industry
  • applied oligopoly theory
  • product differentiation and technical change
  • theory of the firm and internal organization
  • regulation
  • monopoly
  • merger and technology policy

Necessarily, these subjects will often draw on adjacent areas such as international economics, labour economics and law.

Journal of Industrial Economics Best Article Prize:
Commencing in 2005, the author(s) of the paper judged to be the best article published in the Journal of Industrial Economics during the preceding year will be awarded a prize of US$3000. Each author will also receive an award certificate. The winning article will be chosen by the members of the JIE's editorial board from a short list of four papers, consisting of one nominated by each of the journal's four editors.

"Best Article of the Year" Prize Awarded for 2006
The Editorial Board have awarded the prize for the best article published in 2006 to the co-authors Joel Waldfogel and Lu Chen, whose article "Does Information Undermine Brand? Information Intermediary Use and Preference for Branded Web Retailers" appeared in the December, 2006, issue (Volume LIV No. 4).

The Editorial Board have awarded the prize for the best article published in 2005 to the co-authors Jeffrey R. Campbell and Hugo A. Hopenhayn, whose article "Market Size Matters," appeared in the March, 2005, issue (Volume LIII No.14).
