Freshwater Biology publishes papers on all aspects of the ecology of inland surface waters, including rivers and lakes, connected ground waters, flood plains and other wetlands. We publish studies of micro-organisms, algae, macrophytes, invertebrates, fish and other vertebrates, as well as those concerning whole systems and related physical and chemical aspects of the environment. Manuscripts with an experimental or conceptual flavour are especially welcome, as are those which integrate laboratory and field work, and studies from less well researched areas of the world.

Special Issue:Freshwater Biodiversity and Conservation Planning
with accompanying Virtual Issue
Freshwater biodiversity is declining rapidly all around the world as a result of human activities that concentrated on rivers, lakes and wetlands and their catchments. Managers and policy-makers seek conservation solutions that will protect and improve biodiversity while minimizing costs and social impacts on users and inhabitants of the catchment.
Systematic conservation planning relies on a group of powerful quantitative tools to prioritize conservation actions and direct conservation efforts to places where the greatest gains can be achieved at the lowest cost. Although these tools have been widely and successfully used in terrestrial and marine settings, they have only recently been adapted to the freshwater realm, in part because freshwater ecosystems pose unique challenges.
This Special Issue presents eleven papers from leading experts on five continents, and deals with running waters, wetlands, and lakes and a variety of taxa, including fishes, plants and invertebrates. These papers show that a wide range of approaches in systematic conservation planning can successfully be adapted for use in freshwater systems. Focal topics in the Special Issue include optimal spatial prioritization, use of modern statistical techniques, multiple ways to include connectivity in conservation planning, applications to data-poor regions, use of coarse filter-fine filter approaches, use of biodiversity surrogates, hierarchical protection strategies and other cutting-edge ideas.
This Special Issue will interest conservation planners, water and catchment managers, freshwater biologists and ecologists and anyone interested in the conservation of freshwater biodiversity.
