MWH is one of the world’s largest providers of water, environmental, infrastructure and energy services. Our specialisation began with Thomas Hawksley’s pioneering water engineering practice, established in England in 1844. Today, MWH is an employee-owned global business with 170 offices and 7,000 staff worldwide. More than 1500 of those staff are in the UK working either in MWH’s own offices or co-located with our clients. We provide complete long-term solutions and assured delivery through the application of our skills in: Business Consultancy, Project & Programme Management, Engineering, Construction and Environmental Management.
A substantial part of MWH’s business is in providing cost effective and sustainable solutions to flooding, particularly for large urban areas. Through our commitment to ongoing research, we have been developing both a greater understanding of the potential of climate change to increased flood risk for urban communities and novel strategies to mitigate this risk. Working with municipalities globally we have demonstrated that it is possible to adapt urban areas to make them more resilient to flooding and have delivered schemes which combine conventional flood defence with the active management of flood water on the surface.
This approach is made possible through applying risk management techniques and advanced modelling and mapping, together with innovative engineering design. MWH is therefore delighted to be supporting this new journal which we believe will make a substantial contribution to addressing the global challenges of flood risk management for the benefit of society as a whole.
