Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of the work was to study the relation of HDL cholesterol with different classes of lipids, some parameters of coagulation hemostasis, degree of carotid arteries (CA) stenosis and intima-media thickness in patients with heart ischemic diseases.

Methods: According to CA stenosis, 48 patients with chronic heart ischemic diseases (mean age 55.7 1.60 years) were divided in 2 groups. Group I comprised 23 patients, who had hemodynamically insignificant stenosis (<50%). Group II consisted of 25 patients with hemodynamically significant stenosis (>50%). CA intima-media thickness of three patients made up 1.18 0.1 mm.

Results: In group I the value of HDL cholesterol was 1.09.0.028mmol/l, in group II it was 0.920.026 mmol/l. As the result of the correlation analyses, relation of HDL cholesterol witth CA stenosis degree appeared to be negative (r = -0.432), relation of this parameters with intima media thickness was similar (r= -0.418).

HDL cholesterol and total cholesterol corralation in the patients studied was positive (group I – r=0.277, group II - r=0.322). The Pearson coefficient in respect to LDL cholesterol, was 0.251 and 0.276. Relation with triglycerids in both groups was significant and positive (r=0.337, r=0.242).

Interrelation of HDL cholesterol and hemostasis parameters (protein C, fibrinogen, INR, APTT, D dimers) in 84.5% of patients was positive.

Conclusions: Taking into consideration the results obtained, we think it possible to use correlation between HDL cholesterol and CA atherosclerotic lasion parameters as well as various lipids and some hemostasis parameters as carotid atherosclerosis markers.
