Geophysical Journal International is one of the world's leading primary research journals in geophysics. The Board of Editors is international in representation.  The Journal aims to promote the understanding of the earth's internal structure, physical properties, evolution and processes. Subjects covered include:

  • the whole range of earthquake and controlled source seismology; tides, the Earth's gravitational field in relation to its shape, deep interior, crustal structure, stress and isostasy;
  • palaeomagnetism and rock magnetism and their application to geomagnetism, internal processes and geotectonics;
  • heat flow, electromagnetism, rheology and volcanology;
  • and geophysics applied to the structure and evolution of rifts, ridges, trenches, mountains, continents and oceans.

Geophysical Journal International is delighted to announce 85 years of content now available online .  Issues date back to Volume 1, Issue 1, first published in March 1922.  For further information on how to access this content please visit our Librarian Site.

NEW! Student Author Award Scheme
Designed to recognise and acknowledge the 'best papers' submitted to Geophysical Journal International from young scientists in the field, manuscripts are short listed by our high profile Editorial Board and highlighted on the Geophysical Journal International homepage.  [To qualify, students are required to be the first author at submission].

The winner(s), announced in November 2008, will receive a cash prize and a certificate from the Royal Astronomical Society.  Acknowledgement will be made at the American Geophysical Union meeting in December and the EGU General Assembly meeting in 2009. The winning paper(s) will also be highlighted on the Geophysical Journal International homepage.
