Blackwell Publishing Ltd Work Experience Scheme 2006-2007

The challenges of starting a career in publishing can be daunting, but perseverance often leads to a very rewarding career. Our research shows that undertaking work experience placements while you are waiting for a permanent publishing role is good way to gain helpful experience and understanding of the industry.

From November 2006 to September 2007, we are pleased to be able to offer up to 20 structured work experience placements based at our Oxford offices.

We will also continue to offer work-experience placements in addition to those offered as part of the scheme although we cannot guarantee availability.

Who is the scheme for?

If you are serious about a career in publishing, we would love to hear from you. We are particularly interested in hearing from you if you:

  • Are an undergraduate and about to enter/have just entered your final year of study.
  • Are an undergraduate and about to enter/have just entered your second/penultimate year of study and are seeking a placement for the summer vacation before your final year of study.
  • Have already graduated and are about to embark/have embarked on a post-graduate qualification.
  • Have already graduated and are looking for your first publishing position.
  • Are considering a career change and want to find out more about the publishing industry.
  • Are returning to work from a career break and want to find out more about the publishing industry.  

How does the scheme work?

  • The Work Experience Scheme runs from November 2006 to September 2007.
  • We will have up to 20 structured work experience placements available to people at various points throughout the year.
  • The placements are available across our publishing departments in books and journals including Marketing, Production and Editorial.
  • When you join us and for how long will vary depending on our needs as a Company and your availability. We have a mixture of one day a week and block placements of between one week to one month available.
  • Although the placements are unpaid, we do cover reasonable costs towards travel and food.

  • The opportunity to undertake a range of tasks typically associated with the roles that people starting a career in publishing join us in (for example, those of Editorial Assistant, Production Assistant, and Marketing Assistant). In some areas there may also be the opportunity to undertake specific project work.
  • The opportunity to find out more about new vacancies that arise during your time with us and to apply if interested.
  • The opportunity to have an evaluation of your placement taken into consideration towards future employment with Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
  • The opportunity to tell us what you thought of your placement.  

How do I apply?

If you are interested in a work experience placement, the first step is to complete our career in publishing application form clearly indicating your choice in the section of the application entitled: Why are you completing this form? You can apply in three ways:

  • You can do this online by going to the "How to Apply" section. Please indicate clearly your first and second choice publishing area in the section "Why would you like to gain work experience at Blackwell Publishing?"
  • Alternatively, email new.challenge@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com and we will send you a copy. Once completed, email your application to us as the above address putting "WORK EXPERIENCE" in the subject area of the email. You can also post a hard copy stating "work experience" in the address below.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE SCHEME (2006 2007) IS FRIDAY 27TH OCTOBER 2006.

Please help us to help you by listing the exact dates that you would be available for work experience between November 2006 and September 2007.

After the closing date, your application will be short-listed and you will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible.

If you are successful at this stage, then you will be contacted by a placement manager to discuss your application. If successful at this stage, you will be offered a placement.

We aim to have allocated all placements by the beginning of December 2006.

Are other work experience placements available?

There may be ad-hoc placements that become available during the year so we are always happy to hear from you. We cannot guarantee a placement, however we will contact you directly if we are able to offer a placement that suits your requirements and availability.
